SerOps vs Datadog Bits AI SRE
Bits AI SRE is Datadog's investigation agent: it starts on every alert and works through the telemetry you already send to Datadog. SerOps does root cause analysis too, but runs on your servers, uses your own AI provider, and reads Datadog or any other log, metric and trace backend.

The short answer
Pick Bits AI SRE if everything already lives in Datadog and you want the investigation inside it: Datadog describes it as an agent that automatically investigates every alert the moment it fires, using Datadog logs, metrics, APM, dashboards, notebooks and runbooks linked from monitors.
Pick SerOps if you want the analysis self-hosted, paid at your AI provider's token price rather than per investigation, or if your telemetry is spread across Datadog and other tools such as Elasticsearch, Loki, Splunk, Prometheus or CloudWatch. The AI analysis is in the free, open-source Community edition.

Where the analysis runs, and what it costs
Bits AI SRE is part of Datadog's hosted platform. Its documentation notes it is not available on Datadog's US government sites. Datadog bills it in AI credits: from $500 per 500 credits a month billed annually, or $1.30 per credit on demand, and its pricing page lists an autonomous investigation at about 6.5 credits.
SerOps runs on your own servers with Docker Compose or Helm. The AI calls go to the provider you choose with your own key (Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, DeepSeek or any OpenAI-compatible API), or to Ollama on your own hardware. Sentinel skips the AI call when nothing changed, and a monthly AI budget caps spending per organisation (AI costs).
Your data: one vendor or several
Bits AI SRE works from what Datadog holds. Its knowledge sources are Datadog telemetry, dashboards and notebooks, runbooks in Confluence linked from monitor messages, and a bits.md file describing your environment.
SerOps queries the backends you already run, without copying your telemetry: Datadog logs, metrics and APM traces, and also Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Loki, Splunk, Prometheus, CloudWatch, Google Cloud and Azure. It adds your code changes and deployments from GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, Argo CD and Flux, so an incident is matched to the commit that reached that environment.

Alerts, and incidents without one
Bits AI SRE investigates when a monitor alerts. SerOps can do the same: forward Datadog monitor webhooks and it analyses the affected service. It also analyses every project and environment on a schedule (every 15 minutes by default), so issues surface even when no alert fired.
Frequently asked questions
Can SerOps analyse data that is in Datadog?
Yes. Connect Datadog as a log, metric and trace provider, and forward monitor webhooks if you want an analysis the moment an alert fires. See Datadog integration.
Can I use both?
Yes. They don't conflict: some teams keep Bits AI SRE inside Datadog and use SerOps where data lives in other tools, or where they need the analysis on their own servers.
How much does a SerOps analysis cost?
The software is free when you self-host. Each analysis is a call to your AI provider at its token price, or nothing at all with a local model; Sentinel skips quiet windows. See AI costs.
Is SerOps free?
SerOps Community, the complete product with the AI analysis, is free and open source under AGPL-3.0 when you self-host. Enterprise adds governance features for large organisations; nothing moves out of Community.
